How to Treat PCOD?

Treatment for PCOD aims to address the underlying hormonal imbalances, manage symptoms, and prevent long-term health complications. Lifestyle changes such as exercise and a balanced diet, along with medications like oral contraceptives and insulin-sensitizing agents, are often prescribed to manage symptoms such as irregular periods, acne, and excessive hair growth. Treatment plans are tailored to individual needs and may also involve fertility medications or surgery in some cases. Close monitoring and ongoing care are important to effectively manage PCOD and improve overall health outcomes.

Unfortunately, PCOD or Polycystic Ovarian Disease, is now becoming a reality for millions of women worldwide. While PCOD affects different women differently, having to deal with its varying symptoms, like excessive hair growth, acne, irregular bleeding, mood swings, fertility issues, etc., is no easy feat. Every woman who suffers from any of these symptoms due to PCOD wishes to get rid of them and enjoy a normal healthy life.

Although there is indeed no one specific cure for PCOD, the condition and its symptoms can be managed successfully with PCOD problem treatment, lifestyle changes and medications.

To be able to treat PCOD successfully, it is important to be aware of certain aspects of the PCOD problem.

Diagnosing PCOD

There is no single PCOD test that confirms the diagnosis of the PCOD problem. PCOD diagnosis, therefore, requires a comprehensive examination and evaluation of the patient. Here are a few ways combining which doctors will diagnose PCOD:

  1. Medical history evaluation
  2. Physical examination
  3. Blood tests
  4. Pelvic ultrasound
  5. Glucose tolerance test

Patients may need to take some or all of these tests depending on their symptoms. The doctor may order additional tests if they deem them necessary for PCOD diagnosis.

PCOD Treatment

Many women wonder if their PCOD can be cured completely. Although there is no specific cure for PCOD, women can successfully manage the symptoms of PCOD and live normal lives with the help of following:

  1. Medications: Doctors may prescribe medications such as birth control pills to regulate menstrual cycles and reduce excess hair growth. Other medications may also be prescribed to manage additional symptoms for regulating hormones and improving insulin resistance.

  2. Lifestyle changes: While medications can help manage certain symptoms of PCOD, lifestyle changes may act as an important PCOD problem solution. Maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, stopping smoking and excessive alcohol intake, and weight management can help improve a lot of PCOD symptoms and lead a healthy, physically active life.

  3. Laser Hair Removal: Women who suffer from hirsutism or excess body hair due to PCOD may opt for laser hair removal treatments to get rid of the excessive hair.

  4. Acne treatment: PCOD-related acne treatment is available for women who suffer from a lot of acne due to hormonal imbalances. Oral or topical medications and acne scar treatment can be used to get rid of acne and its marks.

  5. Fertility treatments: PCOD is often diagnosed when women try to conceive and are unsuccessful. Women with PCOD who are trying to conceive may benefit from certain medications and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), IUI etc. Thankfully, there are now several fertility treatments available that make it possible for women to become pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy.

  6. Surgery: Surgery is most often not required for PCOD. However, in rare cases, surgery may be recommended to remove cysts or scar tissue from the ovaries or if the symptoms are too severe and all other lines of treatments have failed. In such cases, surgical treatments like ovarian drilling, ovarian wedge resection, etc., may be done.

While there may not be a cure for PCOD, women facing PCOD-related issues must not get disheartened. PCOD symptoms can be successfully treated, and women can even conceive with the right treatment for PCOD.

It is, however, of utmost importance that women choose an experienced and board-certified fertility doctor and a reputable fertility clinic like Indira IVF to help manage their PCOD symptoms successfully.
