Irregular Periods - What are Symptoms of Irregular Periods

When the duration of a menstrual cycle unexpectedly goes outside of the normal range, one may have an irregular period. Among the symptoms of irregular periods is abnormal uterine bleeding, such as:

Bleeding or spotting between periods
Bleeding after sexual intercourse
Heavy bleeding during period
Menstrual bleeding that lasts longer than 5-7 days
Bleeding after one has reached menopause

One should also visit a doctor if in case any of the following symptoms are observed about their menstrual cycle:

Absence of period for 90 days
Menstruation suddenly becomes irregular
A menstrual cycle shorter than 21 days
A menstrual cycle longer than 35 days
Period lasts for more than a week
Bleeding becomes unusually heavy
Extremely painful periods

Many females have a regular menstrual cycle after adolescence. The cycle, however, is expected to vary by a few days each time. A regular menstrual cycle can have particular characteristics for different individuals and as such, out of the ordinary characteristics must be checked for.

Menopause symptoms

Menopause is the term used to describe the complete cessation the menstrual cycle in females. It is diagnosed after one has gone 12 months without menstrual period. Menopause can strike in one’s late 40s or start in the early 50s. Irregular periods can be indicative of one’s approaching menopause.
